Very true. Somewhat related: most people are probably unaware of the information they're sharing with their vocabulary choices and posting times / frequency on public platforms. A lot can be inferred from that info. The upcoming insight feature will shed more light on that.
Yes, for sure any interaction can be analyzed (i.e. Satoshi's habits have been studied for years or me and you having different timezones can tell things) but at least those are traces an user can choose to leave or not.

Been using it for years, over here. Great for proof of identity. Average/fairly usable for file sharing, instant messaging, and its other collaboration features. Sluggish desktop clients.
I guess it's just an identities repository as long your contacts does not uses it

What do you think about Keybase? I appreciate you spreading these privacy facts and then suggesting alternatives. And @bevan... who would ever have those "read" or "typing" or "last seen" messages on?! (Do people not check the settings, or do they sincerely like the feature?)
I am still unsure if I like Keybase or not. It's a directory/identify service. Doesn't seem to track/analyze you but obviously it helps to track your digital life. Do you use it? What do you think of it?

Here's an article on the exploit, it actually has to do with the "online" indicator that can be read even by those outside of your contact list apparently: https://robertheaton.com/2017/10/09/tracking-friends-and-strangers-using-whatsapp/
Thank you, very nice link. I was thinking of building something similar. It's amazing how people is not aware of the privacy invasion they are subject to.

For awhile, anybody could get that information from your whatsapp if you had "last seen" enabled, even if they'd never chatted with you before. It may still be possible.
Yeah, for sure any contact of yours can build your typical day just from that info.

Most of us would not give our private, personal information to strangers and then trust them not to leak it. But that’s essentially what we do every time we store chat histories, documents, and pictures on the cloud.

I have debit cards. Got locked out of the online interface for topping my Euro/GBP balance up (AirNZOneSmart.co.nz). The other debit card is in NZD and I use it for online purchases (e.g. SafetyWing.com insurance). That's what I was able to get the GBP for the airport bus out of.

Thanks to my bank locking me out I now: - Was forced to take out money from another account. It was set aside for my health insurance payment today, and by tomorrow I will be without cover. - Cannot afford any other transport than airport bus (which I only JUST have enough for...) - Will have to wait 5 hours for that (thank god I booked a late flight) - Have no means of getting water or food for the interim 🤣

Sterile, exactly. And a little manipulative. I still think it has potential, but I wish there was a version where people were held accountable for what they posted, claimed, or messaged to others.
It's a sort of "We are not as Facebook but in the end we are". Topics on my feed are unuseful, a "bla bla bla" chat we could have in a pub.

I'm considering re-quitting most forms of social media. The life benefit I'm getting from them is fairly neutral. Think I will do a 30 day holiday from LinkedIn and see if it has any negative affect on my life. Professionally wise most of the real smart/entrepreneurial folks I know don't spend time on it... it's similar to Twitter, there's a lot of poseurs.
I use LinkedIn only as a professional contact list. No interaction on the feed (I find the posts there so boring and sterile).

Earlier this week, Google blocked all ad blockers, and now Microsoft has de-listed UBlock Origin (a powerful ad-blocker). Without real choice, monopolies will dictate what you see and do on the Internet.

But then... Apple has access to your forwarded emails, right? So you're trading one company and aspect of privacy for another (never mind the fact that the biggest email privacy concern is probably the 'free' email service that's the final destination.) With their pull, they could probably mandate app's email users strictly with pgp / encryption AND then get those messages to users.
Maybe would be nice to see both solved. I would love it (ProtonMail style maybe). But this is a first step on avoiding massive spam or personal identification in the future (think of big websites hacked and so on).

I get your point. The service is one way to avoid leaving your personal data everywhere and being spam-harassed in the future (think of spam phone calls). That's a proxy that you can disable in case of abuse. The system is not focused on email secrecy (that's another long story).

Ah, I should make that more clear. There should be a gray "sign in with email" text link under the big blue "sign in with Web3" button. If you don't have a Web3 provider, it shows you the email entry form as the primary element.
Ok, it was pretty visibile on iOS (where a web3 provider is not available). I can’t say the same on my desktop on Firefox with metamask installed.
