Glad you're ok! That's something I've never experienced. What was it like?

Thunder comes in loud short waves. Sounds kind of like the world's biggest freight train. Wind is constant and loud too. I've been through more hurricanes than tornados but this wasn't my first one. My whole family comes from Arkansas so we know exactly what to do during a storm.

Did you get a warning beforehand? Why didn't you evacuate?

Got the warning about 15 minutes beforehand on my phone. It woke me up. It's best not to get into a car during a tornado. You're safer where I was in the hallway with as many walls as possible away from the outside.

Nah. I was sitting in the hallway checking the news on my phone the whole time. Roommate went outside but I think he's a crazy bastard for doing so. #nsfw

A tornado just passed me by within a quarter of a mile. No damage but nothing gets the heart pounding like uncertain death to wake you up.

I spotted this herd of wild potatoes earlier today. They must have a similar migratory pattern as the yams. #InTheWild

Potatoes can be dangerous in prides. Be careful out there.

It's good to see them roaming free in their natural habitat.

Clearly a Migratory Brown Yam. Rare to see them this far south this time of year.

Not all Ensō are happy Ensō. You are right, the flames were huge and raging. It could have been much worse had the wind been stronger or in another direction. Part of me feels that somewhere along the line, some kind of incompetence has occurred to cause this fire. We'll see.

A lot of things happen due to random chance and snowball. If you're a Determinist you believe everything happens that way. We can analyze the past to an infinitesimal degree but it's best to live in the present with hope for the future. The future will be better.

Apr 16, 2019 13:43

Thank you for the enso @arf. I wish it was under better circumstances. I looked at pictures of the damage this morning and considering the size of the blaze it was pretty minimal. The bell towers are intact. There is a small hole in the main chapel but not completely caved in.

Would have loved to have seen it, but nothing lasts forever... I’m curious how reactions will be. Hopefully better than when Christchurch had it’s cathedral (on a much smaller historic scale) damaged - it resulted in a lot ogni insighting between “restorers” and “rebuilders”

It will be rebuilt. Monuments tend to last. It's just a loss of the old and the replica will not have the same charm for hundreds of years.

And if that doesn't make sense, it can get even simpler: - You can't be sure that the past is real - You can't be sure that the future is real either - Really, the only thing that ever exists is now - 'Living' in either the past or future is the source of all pain

On one hand you have memory which is inceptable to falsehoods that pervert the meaning. On the other hand you have projection which is wishful thinking combined with anxiety. The only thing you can be sure of is right here and right now.

Playing with a remote controlled car as a kid. I once had one whose wheels were taller than the body, so it could flip over and continue rolling. So fun! How about you?

I always wanted that car growing up. My family didn't have a lot of money and I was more focused on what video games we could get our hands on. Still if I saw that remote controlled car for sale now I'd probably buy it.

I'm a real big fan of the concept that "negative" actions/emotions, if harnessed well, can help a good person be more effective. Why else would our world have evolved to have us able to lie, hurt, and threaten each other? There's clearly a value to deceit/aggression.

With the deceit part it's pretty simple. As a species our brains are broken to get pleasure from deceiving others. It's called deceiver's delight. People smile when they lie for that reason. It's like a cookie. And like a cookie you have to many of them and there are consequences

#lkie That sounds like a good Monday. Are you using the sous vide regularly? Still tempted to get one.

I'm using the sous vide almost everyday for lunch. It's become part of my morning routine to take a bag out of the freezer and throw it in the sous vide container and just turn it on. When they say it cooks it at the perfect temperature it really does and comes out perfect.

Appreciating the imperfections leads to perfection. Do you agree with this one?

That's a very Japanese viewpoint. They have an entire philosophy called Wabisabi that takes that as its central tenet. I find that imperfections should be appreciated at least artistically but don't discount efficiency in practical matters.

Citizens and their guns will not outgun a tyranical government any longer, imho. We need new and more powerful ways to keep governments in check. And we may, in fact, be using one right now. That said, you can be violent with anything. We should focus on the violence.

I wouldn't be so sure. The American government actually runs red vs blue war games and revolt is the focus. The government loses every time mainly do to subversive forces in their own military. Hard to keep a military when you're forcing them to kill their neighbors. #politics
