That makes a few of us in support of the term...

Yep. I guess my argument is that a blockchain isn't really required to solve the part I care about (reducing spam), and is actively harmful in other things I care about (some of which I have written about at great length - https://bit.ly/2JLtzBG )

Thanks for sharing! Will read.

I think there must be a solution that can preserve the benefits of the blockchain while minimizing the potentially negative characteristics.

The blockchain is essential for the things *I* care about... so I hope I'm not wrong.

In my opinion, that's a risk to the whole platform. It's easier to take down (music/movies/images) that infringes on copyright than taking on a whole (RIAA/MPAA/stock agency) agency. Not to mention things like child pornography etc. IMO, that's not 'cost', that's 'risk'.

Your problem is basically with open blockchains generally. Your concern is that data cannot be deleted - which is the *point* of most permissionless blockchains. Not to say dApps couldn't be designed to make deletion possible - but at that point a blockchain is no longer required

I can see verification becoming more and more important. The more verifications someone has the more trustworthy they appear. Currently Peepeth has twitter and the mosquito badge (plus an optional third - email for invite). I want to follow the verified

I think that if @Bevan can make those verification accessible on the blockchain, he has a good chance to get a head-start on being a badge/trust hub of sorts.I think verifications are an awesome idea and super valuable.

What about an account that posts on the public peepeth feed though? Will original team be responsible for that, a selected group of individuals, others?

The Peepeth community/devs will have control of *everything* that gets displayed on Peepeth.com. The raw data - stored on the blockchain - will be available to other front ends. Each of those will be able to moderate everything they show on their respective sites.

A bad actor can’t delete their peeps, it is there on the permanent record. Clients can hide content.

People tend to overestimate the ability to "delete" things on the internet we currently have. Screenshots, snapshots, archives- I know efforts are being made to be able to "forget" - but how feasible is that?

The social media we currently have give a false sense of security, imo

Thanks for the response. Just for clarification. The Peepeth front end is censorable. Meaning there is some centralized party making the decision to censor certain content. If I don't like their censorship I build my own front end or join a different one (if there is one).

BOOM. Exactly. And the work @Bevan is doing is not just for Peepeth - alternative frontends will be a focus. There *will* be other front ends.

On concern with community curation is that the process of doing so risks being longwinded and inefficient.

I suppose it will depend on the community doing the moderating. Haven't you ever posted something controversial to the bitcoin reddit? It's removed in a matter of seconds!

This has come up many times, most probably because it is a very legitimate concern. The blockchain is uncensorable, but the individual front-ends are free to censor content. Individual communities can curate the content. Most communities will censor things illegal or hateful.

Wonder why Brave calls it's unidirectional token trap a wallet "The Brave BAT wallet is currently unidirectional" https://brave.com/faq-payments/#refund-money

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I think they have a lot of other things to deal with. I don't like being forced to register with uphold to partake of the publishing side of the ecosystem. Hopefully they can work on that later. For now, at least not *worse* than Google etc.

(6/6) The old guard will, quietly or claiming to aid the revolution, move to seize power even as decentralized services – exchanges, marketplaces, interoperability, etc. – ostensibly decrease reliance on trust. They are increasingly doing this by acquiring companies.

I think all of what you said is wise - worth peeping and pondering.

The only true defense I can think of is education - as cliché as it sounds. If people reject concentrations of power on principle, then I hope we can at least incrementally improve the current state of the world

Cryptocurrencies are for ILLEGAL CRIMES. I'll stick to something with inherent value like paper cash, which can't be used for anything bad!!!

Well, technically speaking, if having/mining/exchanging cryptocurrency were made illegal... that would be a true statement.

Such is the slippery slope of criminality. It can simply mean, and often does mean, whatever ideas/activities those in power do not agree with.

Tell me more. What are the top five dangers you're aware of? Will they supplement existing dangers or supplant them? If the latter, are they *lesser* dangers or greater?

Shoot. Wallet centralization is probably a net negative... though I'm sure wallet functionality will inevitably be built in at the OS level.

I believe that it is a fallacy that the user will ever be able to be the only one in control of their own data. If you hand your unencrypted data to a third party, they now have it forever. It doesn't matter if it's blockchain based or not.

Control the data - ie be able to edit it without my permission or delete it. I'm fully aware it can be used/read by the world in most circumstances.

The definitions/concepts are still a little shaky/still developing in the space. Lucky us. :-)

I've read the Bookstack white paper and i'm not really fan of the permissioned design. In Blockstack, the devs are still in control of the data, not in Peepeth which use ethereum's trustless blockchain.

I also need to do more research on Blockstack, but if the dapps control the data - rather than the users themselves - then it's not enough of a shift away from the current system for me.

I don't agree with these "pump and dump" schemes at all, but people losing money cannot put the blame on others. If people thoughtfully invested and did their own due-diligence, then the success of those P&D orchestrations would be severely diminished. Education before regulation
