Week in Ethereum by @evanvanness Includes Peepeth crowd funding. http://www.weekinethereum.com/post/177341046488/august-24-2018
Thanks @evanvanness!
@hankcooper To be clear: Peepeth.com is an unapologetically moderated front-end. See peepeth.com/about
However, the hashtag-politics feature is not an example of that. Only posts that include that hashtag come with that warning. It's self-imposed.
Thanks to everyone who's supported the Kickstarter!
BTW: a reward survey will be sent out after it ends, at which point you can link your Peepeth account.

So either another service would offer 'pure peeps' or do you think sometime in the future peepeth will? Just a question on 'Well they say it isn't censored, but no one knows how to get the data' argument. (I mean I know it can be extracted, but most might not get it)
Yes. Some tiers of the Kickstarter will allow users to audit moderated content.

I haven't dug much but I think I get it. Peepeth is 'moderated' meaning that when displaying peeps on the site there is flair and javascript stuff happening, but anyone can see all peeps if they review the contract? So in the end no censorship whatsoever?
Flair warnings are only an example of moderation in the case of "nsfw". But the content is still visible- just need to click reveal.
"politics" hashtag is included by users as a courtesy.
TOS-violating posts will be removed from the feed, but are still onchain.

I see! Makes me wonder what mechanism is in place to stop two people using the same username. Thanks for being helpful.
Good question! There is a validation on the smart contract for that.

Well maybe blocking was not the right term, but without naming names I know of peeps being labeled with a radioactive icon and buried where itโs not seen. I know truth is an ambiguous term as well but censorship is happening everywhereand I got upset to hear about it on Peepeth
Peepeth.com has always been a moderated platform.
However, what you saw was not an example of that.
People are now asked to tag their own posts with the politics or NSFW hashtags, as a courtesy to others.

Every username change is written to the blockchain and the last one written is the one you will have on any fork. @Bevan will correct me if I'm mistaken :) ATM, one can change the username, but not the address. The latter is in works.
That's correct. All usernames are indeed associated with an address. @Jaco
Thanks @voyager for buying a Mosquito badge!
Why give? A dollar to the Against Malaria Foundation goes farther to prevent suffering than a dollar to any other charity, according to top effective altruism charity evaluators.

Thank you @cyan for buying a Mosquito badge!
The number of mosquito nets we collectively buy through the Against Malaria Foundation is a better metric of Peepeth's success than its # of daily active users. Thank you.

@Bevan check the traffic numbers, how many are currently using the site? Compare it at this moment to the rest of the week, how many new posters at 8pm MST. Momentum is everything...
Appreciate your concern. Macro momentum is good.
I don't look at traffic numbers on a daily basis, or else I may have quit a long time ago :)

@Bevan slight usability feedback - from the notifications page I can't command-click (macOS) a username to open their profile in a new tab because the link is a javascript action. #UX

Good clarification. Keep up the amazing work @bevan, you're doing great! People need to understand that they're literally free to build their own frontends for Peepeth (something that is NOT possible to do via Twitter, only moderated clients via Twitter API).
Thanks, @conlan.
Peepeth is nuanced compared to normal platforms, because of its architecture and mission. To succeed mainstream, it will have to communicate itself very clearly.

@Bevan also a question about signing peeps - is there any impact for Peepeth.com if a user signs all actions instantly vs batching up to 15 at a time? (ie what is the "nicer" thing for me to do)
Thanks for asking. It actually doesn't matter, so sign away!
Replying to @jm9k (0xa7bd09daab3eb5ec96f04914d94c47681489d604)
Most people want some level of moderation, even if they donโt realize it. If there is absolutely nothing, the platform becomes unusable. Itโs freedom of choice in what is moderated that we should be seeking. Thatโs exactly the approach Peepeth is taking with their architecture.
Thanks, Jordan.

@bevan, here are my ideas. 1. UNFURL links 2. Add opt-in advertising and partner with BAT to help fund the platform growth. 3. Add a least 3 Enso's per day. This is a micro-blog and it sucks to not be able to show appreciation or agreement with more than one person per 24 hours
Working on a solution for acknowledging more peeps. Now there's #lkie and tips in addition to Ensล. Other possibilities too :)
See FAQ about links- they unfurl only for users who meet certain age / peepcount / mosquito badge requirements.
Yes about BAT, thank you!

@bevan Random thought: Peepeth could consider rebranding the underlying smart contract that writes to IPFS as something else, ie "OpenMicroblogNetwork.org" which publishes details on how to use it. That could help decouple the frontend from the data storage in people's minds.
Interesting idea!

I wish I knew how to say this in 280 characters. Those who followed @fulcrum and I here are not contrary to Peepeth's goals. An opportunity is laid at @bevan's feet, by serendipity, to create something greater, both in line with his goals and the interests of those unexpected.
I understand. We're all fighting for essentially the same thing, a better world. Peepeth's approach may not be in line with Fulcrum's chosen avenue for achieving that; censorship resistance is not the main focus here, but is rather a nuanced aspect of a solution.

@bevan Oh. I see. I click the little link and then the peep is there. This is like the NSFW moderation on #Steemit. Sort of imperfect. My first suggestion is to make the hashtag searchable for folks who are actually seeking out these kinds of peeps.

I would say the awareness is still pretty low (<1%). Iโve met at least 5 founders of crypto companies. There is an international org Government Blockchain Association establishing itself there. Some research is being conducted and the government/central bank is neutral ++ for now
Glad to hear a community is forming. I hope to make it back to Yaoundรฉ, and will look up crypto groups when I do.
Interested in your idea of making crypto more accessible there (seems like it may apply to anywhere else for that matter)- any ideas on how to do that?

Might want to re-name Peepeth to "Ostrich"..The ostrich has no vocal chords to enable it to produce sounds like other birds. Initially ostrich chicks make a weak chirping sound but after about 2 months become voiceless. "political correctness" censorship kills the bird?
The fact that Peepeth's front-end is moderated was never a secret.
A number of users are here on @fulcrum's recommendation, who misrepresented the intent of the site in his videos (my fault- working on making it 100% clear).
