The EU's highest court has decided that website owners can be held liable for data collection when using the so-called "social sharing" widgets. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/07/29/eu_gdpr_facebook_like_button/ #privacy #privacyMatters

I'm not entirely against this. It simply holds site owners accountable for what they're putting on their site. If they want the benefits of these widgets, they have to accept the risks and responsibilities. I mean, what if a widget directed people to a pedophile site.

good thing I like naps because anxiety about tomorrow is keeping me up tonight.... Time to try some breathing and the calm app. Or just move to Denver.

"breathing or just move to Denver"... That's pretty much how I've lived my life and I don't regret one minute of it. If breathing doesn't work, fuck it. Pack the bags and try someplace else. More power to you. I've moved more times than I can count and I don't regret any of them.

but is wealth increasing? I know anger is increasing.

I think global wealth is increasing, but it is not being distributed in any sustainable way. For example, we have enough food for everyone, but there is still hunger. Is anger really increasing or are we just more aware of it? Is it just rising to the surface via tech?

A good friend once reminded me of this wisdom which helps calm passion: Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

Thank you for sharing that analogy. I'm wondering why anger seems to be increasing in a world in which wealth is also increasing. Why is that? How do we counter that?

Therefore, an otherwise good person can be tricked into performing bad acts (i.e. exclusion, murder) when tribal passions are excited. We know it's wrong to steal, rape, and kill, but people can still be persuaded to perform those acts on people not of their tribe.

And so we must all do our most to include those who do not look or speak like us in our circles, our lives. Our survival depends on it. We must actively reach out and love each other to counter tribal passions that truly threaten our survival as a species.

One fact that gives me hope is that all people know what it means to be a good person. This innate knowledge is not bound by religion or culture. It is innate, instinctive, it's in our DNA. Unfortunately, racism isn't part of that because that DNA was built via tribe.

I should add that Green Door is on Netflix. I'm really happy to see such a show come out of Taiwan. For anybody who has lived in Taiwan for any meaningful amount of time, this show will ring true.

Scary stuff! On a more optimistic note, Steven Pinker's latest book makes a case (although I haven't finished it) that we're on a very positive trajectory in terms of peace and many things that seem to cause it (education, wealth). Spiritual teachers speak of a parallel increase in "consciousness". Could it be that we're evolving? Fingers crossed!

I hope so! I truly hope and work towards that. My fear is that we equate technical advancement with evolution. Technology can aide in our evolution by providing wealth, but it can also aide our more primitive motives. We must press for love, compassion, and forgiveness.

This is my working theory, that we have only progressed scientifically, but nor morally, spiritually, ethically, socially, or in any other way whatsoever. Any sense that we have is afforded by the payoffs of science - more food, time, etc. We are still living in caves.

In short, do we have the ethical capacity to manage our scientific capacity? We are an emotional species using an agnostic (objective) ability to suit our emotional goals. Will that work? Where is the evidence that it will? I could argue there is more evidence it will not.

As evidence of the stupidity of our current emotional/scientific state, we rely on a nuclear deterrent of MAD, mutually assured destruction, from having a nuclear war. That is how out of step our scientific capacity is with our ethical, species-centric (not tribal-centric) state.

How about objective? Factual? My point is that modern culture, meaning since the 1600's or so, has given the concept of science a positive connotation that it does not deserve. Science may be our salvation, or it may be our demise.

Hmm, interesting. I'm fairly new to Japan so I'm still learning about the food. It seems a mix of very healthy and very unhealthy food, like every place else I've lived. But Japan does seem to have a lot of good local produce. Japan has excellent soil. Very rich.

Thanks for the verification. I remember the heat wave of last summer, so this seems so odd. Ocean currents perhaps? Apparently when they do change, areas that previously benefited from warm currents will suffer when they shift. Regardless, thanks for confirming this is abnormal.

Agnostic can be used in a non-religious reference to denote that the subject of discussion is objective or without preference. In software, it can refer to a package that works across all platforms equally.

And so our ability to do science is agnostic because it has no inherently good or bad value. it is simply an ability. We assume that it's a positive ability, but of course it's not. It is agnostic. Uncaring. Objective. Cold. It is used equally for both good and bad.

@cyan I am saying that science is agnostic. It has no good or bad. It can and is used for both. Science has increased life but not humanity. It has increased our ability save but also to kill and manipulate. We, as a species, have only harmed Earth, our home. Can we survive?
