Nate, ETH from Rinkeby doesn't cost real money. The $8.40 just means that's how much it costs if it were ETH from the main network. If it were on the main network do you think the cost is too much?
Not sure, Nick. I don't have anything to gauge it against other than what value I perceive the Moken 721 token to be to me. I can create ERC20 tokens for less than a $1 US on Hexel, so perhaps that is what made me note the cost.

I think another option is to fix/set the price of peeping from the frontend directly, and then the platform can carry on with @abcoathup's idea. Any of those options are better than *free* if you want a thoughtful social media platform with less spam. Just thinking out loud...
I agree that a cost (whatever the ideal amount) would be a good deterrent for spam and be conducive to a thoughtful social media.. A question that I have would be what is the ideal cost that would not prevent adoption and still allow Peepeth to scale.

Mass adoption of a platform /unlike/ what already exists is the goal. Permanence is a great feature. But having some (even very small) costs to deter spam is another great feature, imho. If the frontend will consider paying all costs, I'm saying reconsider - just lower the cost.
If requiring a cost is desired, & as the gas prices are out of Peepeth's control, the only way to reduce the costs would be to 1 - share the costs, like you had mentioned or 2 - increase the batch size from 15. I'm probably missing some more?

Thanks @NateStipe. mokens.io is running on rinkeby currently. I fixed the transaction hash links so they work now. Yep, that's him.
Nick - I got some Rinkeby ETH. When trying to make my Moken, it's showing a cost of $8.40 US. I haven't done anything on Rinkeby before. Does it cost real money? I thought it was testnet ETH?

@abcoathup @bevan @NateStipe Random thoughts. Re: the smart contract backend not being able to limit the batch size, thus opening the platform to a "fire-hose" of spam despite Peepeth's frontend goals, etc... seems less than ideal, imho. Less costs is great - no cost is not.
I agree that costs do dissuade spam.I think a concern is that unpredictable and fluctuating gas costs prevent people peeping. While there will always be a certain amount of people who will pay the costs, there are others who would peep less/not at all & mass adoption is a goal

Hmm - am on day two of working with peepeth and I love the concept, but I find the transaction fees to be a bit high to leverage as a daily twitter replacement. Should be equivalent to dust essentially imo.
Yeah, that's a known concern. @abcoathup just posted a great article with good info regarding the issue and possible solutions. https://medium.com/@abcoathup/evolution-of-decentralised-social-media-dfe567d23e54

Quick question. When I go to post, it gives me the option to attach a picture. Is that going on the blockchain? Isn't that expensive? Couldn't I just use a URL to a picture in the cloud? Be kind. Thanks.
The data is stored on IPFS. A link to your post on IPFS, rather than your picture, is what is saved to the blockchain You can find out more on the Peepeth-How page https://peepeth.com/how

If Peepeth doesn’t do something like this then the flow of peepers and peeps will slow right down. I want to see Peepeth have broad adoption.
I do to as well. I'm not a s fluent on the tech side as some on here. So I am trying to learn as I go. I appreciate your willingness to explain things.

I love Peepeth and with this it can be huge.
Nice post, Andrew. Question regarding your dApp option to cover costs; if the is no cost to the user, would that then open up the platform to mass spamming, trolling, etc.; similar to what Twitter is facing?

Fellow Peeple - we are nearing 1350 of us after 2 months. Taking a page from @lion, I'm awarding $5 to the closest guess, with the date & time (include timezone), of when we'll hit our 2000th Peeper. Contest closes when we reach 1900. Reply to this peep to enter. Good luck
Peepeth has crossed 1400 users and is quickly on its way to 2000. If you want to take a guess at when we'll hit 2k with a chance to win $5 in the process, reply with the date and time (include timezone). Only 4 guesses have come in so far, so you still have good odds.

Not lost. There would be a trusted timestamp (when the batch was saved) and an untrusted timestamp in the peep JSON. A different front end should use the trusted timestamp.
Thanks Andrew. I tried it out and see it. Using Timestampconvert.com I was also able to see the post date. Thanks!

How do I go about gaining more followers? Yes I’m pathetic and need your attention. 😕
Peep things that people find interesting and want to see more of, be that comments, content, etc.

So, if Peepeth ever went down and there was ever a need to retrieve specific peeps based on the time they were actually posted to Peepeth, The actual post time would be lost?

#question
In the How Peepeth Works section, it says:
"Other front-ends cannot trust the timestamps of Peeps that are saved in a batch; instead, those front-ends have to assume that all batch-saved Peeps share the same timestamp of the Bulk Posting itself."

How do we get the world to move away from single use plastic containers e.g. for strawberries? Now that’s a challenge.
There are several bioplastic options out there that compost, but their higher cost is preventing wider adoption. Their costs are coming down and hopefully we can remove petroleum based plastics all together.

Since it’s raining......again. I think I’ll start on making this old basement look a little bit better. Some paint on the steps and some other little things will have it looking great. I also love these old stone walls, circa 1818.
Wow, how cool. I bet there has been so much that has happened in that house over the the last 200 years.

Looks interesting, thanks! How much did they go into the regulations meant to protect local fishermen, and why they backfired / were co-opted by the CodFather / simply didn't work?
They devoted a good amount of time to it. I thought they did a pretty good job presenting both sides. If you eat fish, it's worth it to watch.

Just watched this on Netflix last night about the fishing industry. It's an interesting watch.
