(2/2)...once it becomes more mainstream user adopted...however is there any worry that the technology will become so advanced and efficient that they can run it without users having to pay gas prices? rendering the need to own ether coins useless?
ETH also goes towards more than just gas. dApps use it for services/purchases. By reducing/removing gas costs, it will make ETH even less of a cost barrier to transact

Yes. Every peep is saved to IPFS, the hash is then the transaction input to the smart contract. For batches, the hashes are saved in a database where the hash of the batch is used. For front end saving, the hash of user signed batch hashes is used.
Thanks, it's all coming together for me now. So as you have been saying, peeps are forever. However, the hash is needed to locate them on ipfs. So when "deleting/editing" is debated, is it fair to say it would be the new ipfs hash that is saved to the contract & not the original?

Andrew - I noticed in a recent peep that it told me it was "saving to ipfs". Is every peep saved instantly to ipfs, and then the ipfs location is saved to the contract only when batched?

I believe there should be a edit and delete buttons that only work before actions are committed to the blockchain.
Wouldn't a delete option be the same as selective saving? If I delete the posts I don't want to save, it would be similar to only saving the posts i wanted to.
Replying to @jm9k (0xa7bd09daab3eb5ec96f04914d94c47681489d604)
If alternate frontends are developed, only actions which are saved to the blockchain would be visible.
Wouldn't other front ends be similar to this one in that it is a current post viewer with an ability to save the post locations to the contract? Isn't the ability of this front end to see all posts because they were made here rather than pulling from ipfs?
Replying to @jm9k (0xa7bd09daab3eb5ec96f04914d94c47681489d604)
Selective active saving to the blockchain was another feature that was mentioned a while ago. Actions should be encouraged to be saved to the blockchain though. That's the only way to keep the entire project decentralized.
What is the reason to encourage saving to the blockchain? How would selective saving, across a multitude of users, prevent the project from being decentralized? I understand the concern for censorship and saving to the chain prevents that. For other posts, why is it encouraged?

Hm, temporary editing abilities but lock-in after a cutoff date... maybe batches every 12AM/PM, and your pending Peep gets added to the pool that's closest to 7 days past your post time... interesting
If offering an ability to edit, why not offer an option to save to the blockchain rather than make it a requirement? Peepeth states it's meant to be an uncensorable alternative to Twitter. Having the option to lock in, rather than requiring it, provides that

That is why I feel that a delete button is okay. Again, just my opinion. I'm good with posting for forever - as my activity on Peepeth reflects @satoshisnakamoto
Or to be more specific, an option to not save to the chain. If the permanence is on the chain (assuming Peepeth may one day cease). Additionally, is it really saved forever? the data on IPFS can technically be unpinned and if no nodes have the info, then no permanence.

Accountability is extremely necessary for advancing as social creatures and legitimizing leadership. But that is far out into the long term sociological benefits.

1/2 A delete function is not just threatening to the legitimacy of the users on that platform it is also paramount to the security of the platform. An example could be made that a hacker could break into someones account and delete data.
Currently, unless you save your posts now, they are batched saved when Bevan schedules to save to the chain. He could be hacked too. Any hypothetical situation is probable. If I was so concerned with saving my post, I would save it to the chain then.

Why does everything have to be saved to a blockchain? Couldn't we determine what should be (example - people in countries where freedom of speech is a concern).
Is there a need to save forever a picture of my cat or a sunset? Couldn't I just share it on social media and not want to preserve it forever? If I want to, I could, but why do I have to? What is the concern?
Replying to @SatoshisNakamoto (0x94e2fcc3d3c1a2cd539ab92d8ffc1b7d52ce5b24)
But I believe that if you are going to run a social media platform that is openly decentralized and ran on the blockchain, why run it on a blockchain and have it "decentralized" if I can just erase/append data on it.

It depends on the application/use case of that blockchain. And not all blockchain designs are as decentralized as others.
In reference to "decentralized blockchain powered social media" - what do you see as it's purpose and why would a delete button
be so egregious?
Replying to @SatoshisNakamoto (0x94e2fcc3d3c1a2cd539ab92d8ffc1b7d52ce5b24)
we have time and time again seen the effects of the delete button. Its about time we move forward and FORCE users to adopt decentralized social media by making it more advanced, private, personal and powerful. Media platforms are picked up by trend. So lets become a trend(we are)
I think we should give people an option and not force anything. If decentralization garners more respect/value, the effect of decentralized will be self evident. How is a decentralized social media more private? If it's decentralized, wouldn't it be completely public?
Replying to @SatoshisNakamoto (0x94e2fcc3d3c1a2cd539ab92d8ffc1b7d52ce5b24)
A delete button does not just completely defeat the purpose of decentralized blockchain powered social media. It directly threatens it.
So I know how to focus my questions, what, in your opinion, is the purpose of a decentralized blockchain?

I think by having the option to delete or store "forever" gives users the ability to dtermine what they want to preserve. For those with cencorship concerns, this could be more frequent, for the rest who may want to only preserve certain posts, it would be less so.
This way, you can provide a valuable service allows peeps as well as preserving peeps. No cost to use, with a cost for preservation. Not sure how Peepeth would be monetarily sustainable though. Need to think....

Maybe we could just store hashes of Peeps if people wanted accounts that could delete information... but front end sharing would be more difficult - data would be held hostage again... hmm.... just brainstorming out loud... pardon the tangent...
What is the main reason to save an instant message "forever"? My opinion is that is can best be utilized by those who are censored by the government, etc. There is no reason for me ensure my peeps are saved "forever". I'm just an everyman. I like the idea, but delete is okay too
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
I have also seen many influential figures - even thought leaders in the crypto space - delete controversial Tweets. I think this may be a reason some of them are avoiding Peepeth. If the world wants a delete button... one can be provided. Blockchain social media could still work
But just deleting something doesn't mean it never happened. It just means it's not viewable. I'm sure with all of the technology available, there's a screen grab, re-post, etc of everything social media based, especially from those in the public sphere.
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
Captchas randomly before peeping to slow them down? Get it wrong a few times and you get flagged as a possible bot by the Peepeth front end? The alt front ends could all share that kind of info on chain. Would help each community / front end filter and sort peeps if they chose.
I like the 2 step process. However, programs are getting good at captcha reading. Better than nothing I guess until a more bot resistant option is available
Replying to @abcoathup (0x13ebd3443fa5575f0eb173e323d8419f7452cfb1)
Limit the number of free peeps per day. If your reputation goes up you can get more, if it goes down you get less. Reputation could be based on EnsΕ and replies.
One possible issue with basing on Enso/replies is that there are many great peeps that may not have been commented on or given Enso.
