The initial install can happen through the store, for ease of use. But you could also build the Android apks yourself from the git repos, we will release the code on GitHub shortly for that, and sideload it.

If you just want to test it, you can install the AirGap Vault app on the same device, instead of communication through QR codes the app uses URL schemes to transfer data between AirGap Vault & AirGap Wallet. We only recommend this approach for a small amount of funds.
