If you can access IPFS and an Ethereum node then you can peep. I have peeped directly bypassing the front end. A front end can be blocked or censored.

"A front end can be blocked or censored." ...

... for now. In the future with ENS and Swarm - or whatever other cool decentralized solutions will emerge - hopefully this weakness will be fixed.

Just realized I use the same wallet on two metamasks, and cipher. Ethereum is moving to more of a "global account" feel with Dapps, so how do we secure multiple points of vulnerability? Should your wallet address be your home base?

Yes! It is a global account. Self-managed online identities are really underrated. We need better options for account recovery, though.

This will likely take the form of proxy addresses / delegations. Right now securing all those devices is challenging and critically important.

If people have to trust you /not/ to ban (delete) their stuff, then why wouldn't they just trust you to handle transfers and ownership on your own database?

I thought that Coinbase acquired the entire Cipher project. At least that's what it sounded like when I spoke with @sid on the TokenDaily Deep Dive a month or so ago.

Cipher was bought by Coinbase to be rolled into Toshi. So, "Cipher" prob won't be a thing.

Like everything else on the blockchain - by designing incentives to punish 'bad' behavior (maybe staking something to post a review) and reward 'good' behavior (maybe some ETH for successfully identifying trolls). Different frontends can take different approaches.

So many things putting blockchain in their model to ride the train. What's something that absolutely SHOULD NOT be on the block? Yelp reviews? Snapchat. Hard for a titty pic to self destruct when its immutable.

If you wanted to be a professional reviewer, maybe the hashes could be public and people could pay a few cents to read your professional opinion on a product or service. If it get re-posted without your permission - you have copyright proof there on the blockchain.

Many models!

I think reviews are a perfect fit for the blockchain. Especially if payment TXs could be linked. Honest, well thought out reviews are valuable - they shouldn't just make Amazon rich. Everyone should have access to them - and help identify fakes!

Does dapps with their transaction fees mean only people who don't mind losing a few cents here and there would be using them!?

There will be models of dApps that are "free" in the mainstream sense. Depending on the dApp design, the service itself could pay TX costs or "pay" its users ETH for seeing ads, etc.

The data of successful dApps will (hopefully) be open for others to build with regardless. Win.

Yea that's true, I was thinking of the same thing, you have a choice of keeping your off the hands of big corporations. Although on the blockchain everything is public so does it matter at the end...

This should have the nice side effect of taking away a huge advantage of existing internet behemoths with troves of siloed data. Leveling the playing field is good - lessening the ability of a single organization to influence democracies or steer personal decisions is *great*.

That makes me want to spin up a VM and see why. Must be really annoying...

Metamask question. Is there a way to set it so I don't have to enter 12-word phrase every time I open the browser on my desktop? I realize there's a security tradeoff but I keep very little money in the wallet.

WHOA?! This is not supposed to be a thing. You enter the recovery phrase ONCE and the wallet is saved and protected with a password. The password is all that should be required when you restart the browser and open MetaMask subsequently.

These are all things we need to hear! Thank you.

The dApp space is newer than even the blockchain space - and widespread support just isn't there yet. Devs are still experimenting, figuring out best practices, etc.

I think you'll need another browser then, for desktop dApp stuff. One compatible with MetaMask - or with it built in, a la Brave.

Eventually most browsers and/or OSes will likely support blockchain identities natively - until then, it can be a little... an effort in flexibility.

Thoughts on switching Peepeth to Stellar? Could make the scaling/gas issue go away (not an investor, genuinely curious).

Is the infrastructure there yet? To get a dApp into the hands of users, we don't just need smart contract capabilities on the blockchain. We need the browsers (esp mobile browsers) for the users to interact with the dApps... Ethereum seems to be ahead of the curve in that respect

Yeah - I'm of the opinion that social media can be made better with an open backend. It's hard to get people to imagine something they know - but completely rearchitected in a way that changes incentives, power structures, and interactions in non-trivial ways.

They can mine your data if they want - but you needn't link it to your identity. Ideally you won't even need an email address. Also, you will have options for advertisement-free frontends - the open backend guarantees that.

Besides that, immutability and mobility are priceless.

It takes a very good sport to spend some of the ETH you think will be worth a ton more someday to build the network effect that makes it worth a ton more someday.

If everyone gets excited about decentralization right up until someone actually has to pay to use it - then whatever they are holding... doesn't really seem very valuable. Without people using this stuff, it's not worth much. Too bad people seem to prefer hidden costs.

By most metrics - aside form market-cap - Ethereum is already the number one blockchain. Addresses, transactions, developers, etc. The "threat" isn't Bitcoin - it's scaling and adoption. Bitcoin moves slowly intentionally, the upstarts won't. Exciting times indeed.

I have to counter that point. The process of decentralizing is extremely slow and expensive. There are strong benefits that make it worth it for some tasks, but centralized organizations are inherently much more efficient and cost-effective for many tasks.

In the spirit of being verbose - can you list some tasks that you think will remain less expensive to perform in a centralized manner? After a decentralized architecture is in place for a task - essentially outsourcing everything has to be cheaper than employees and shareholders.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with that - centralization is useful for many things & I don't think every company needs blockchain/s. However if you meant that in a sense of "they shouldn't be willfully blind or ignorant to it's use, including in their company", then I agree 100%.

I don't think centralized orgs will be able to compete with decentralized ones in the long run. The structure is expensive.

In the meantime, decentralization needs to get better at easily keeping secrets, somehow restoring access to misplaced accounts, and general ease of use.
