https://peepeth.com/front_end links to a "Peepeth Reader/Verifier" that has been shared via ipfs.io, but I can't get it to work. When I open the link, I just get a progress bar that fills up, and nothing comes afterward.

That was a (working) prototype spun up by the creator of Leeroy. He was showing what a powerful idea this design was. Since then, the back end has been tweaked a little (to allow for cheap/free peeps). The reader was a casualty. Also why more front ends don't exist yet. Debugging

Yep. I see the double edged sword that peepeth presents. My question though is what happens if peep gets really big and they want to censor it?

Misread this I think. If an outside entity wanted to censor Peepeth. Users could still interact directly with the Etehreum blockchain or spin up their own front ends. It would be like cutting off the head of a hydra if it ever got to that point.

The front end can be censored. In fact, illegal or hateful content WILL be censored. The back end is open. This make the censorship open. It provides the ability for other front ends. People can't lose their userbase or history. Very worst they have to post via a different site.

I don't suppose you've ever wanted to make one with an Ethereum logo as the base? Or does the box part really have to be rectangular for acoustic reasons?

Content is the responsibility of the person creating it. A developer can filter, even censor but it is the creator who is responsible for the content. No one can block anyone from posting via the smart contract. People can be blocked from posting via a front end.

This distinction should be another floating box on the sidebar (desktop). The setup is so different here than traditional infrastructures.

Open backend. Anyone can build on and interact with it. Front end with a very specific goal of fixing "broken" social media dynamics.

That said, it should be made easy to investigate. The building blocks are all transparent - translating that to something easily inspect-able by the average person will require a little effort from the user, but devs are openly working towards that goal. Will happen. 100%

perhaps, I suppose my failure is not knowing a great deal about blockchain, but I am always suspicious about something steering or directing according some algo or some such I did note originate myself

That's the beauty of it. It's 100% open. You can vet it yourself, tweak it yourself, rebuild it yourself. I am generally distrusting of "black boxes" - this tech is going to make transparency relatively EASY... we just need a little more infrastructure for user friendliness.

again with the "steering" thingy. I wholeheartedly disagree because I know no one can be trusted to do it agendalessly. You may not agree, fine. This is why we have the 1stA and why the various soc mediums are WRONG to shadow ban and close sites that someone doesn't like

I feel like you two are on the same page, actually.

No? isn't @ian saying yeah, that's not right and blockchain will help... And you're saying it's def not right, people should steer themselves...
And he's saying blockchains will empower people steer themselves...

i agree. however, there is infinite content on the web and we rely on centralized mediums to access it. decentralized replacements to these systems should steer people towards legitimate, factual content. i believe we can do it in a way that is agendaless and transparent.

I thought #ChiliMac meant technocrats - as in FAANG etc. I need to re-read.

I think blockchains and the dApps built on top of them are going to help combat the damage those companies have been doing, knowingly or otherwise.

I think some of the problem will be - that other people are coming over from Twitter or Facebook where likes and views translate to metrics that move messages further up the queue. The vision (well, Peepeth's vision) for a better social network experience doesn't work like that.

The pace of innovation and tech advancement also probably doesn't help. A couple hundred years ago - your fathers world would have been much more similar to your own.
