If you're in or near Barcelona -- and haven't had enough with #MWC, #4YFN and #RWOT8 events of the past few days, join the Doing Good Doing Well (#DGDW) conference next week. I'll be pitching so there's that too :P http://www.dgdwconference.org/

Thank you. And what's on your cover photo?
This photo was taken at a small-scale cassiterite (tin) mine near Kasongo, Maniema province, but I can't be sure that's what they are showing here :D

All I'm saying is there are atrocities committed because of the mining of rare minerals, there are atrocious working conditions for some miners, and big tech companies profit from the cheap minerals that are a product of all the above. I can respectfully agree to disagree though?
Well we seem to agree

People accept responsibility with coffee beans, palm oil and other goods. I just wish such a vital mineral would receive the same attention. I'm not demonising the people mining I'm disparaging the tech conglomerates who profit off the back of often still impoverished people.
The food business had to respond faster because consumers are more sensitive with what they ingest. That doesn't make food certification programs an example to follow in terms of value distribution. Few things are riper for disruption than certification programs.

My main gripe is not with the mining itself but the apathy shown by tech giants towards the mining conditions. With their massive profit margins they should take more responsibility in the supply chain. Child soldiers and child miners without any PPE is not acceptable in my eyes.
Yup, using supply chain complexity as an excuse. Hence this accountability mechanism.

Tantalum makes the electronic world go round. Unfortunately it's at the expense of many a life in the third world.
Mining (minerals) provides an income to tens of millions of people. Unfortunately, our obsession with negative implications further marginalises these communities.
Welcome to my fight :)
