That imagery is powerful, but there have been myriad garage operations that never made it out of the garage. By chance alone a few of them would tend to get gigantic. Policy failures? Well, you can't get huge if you don't start. You don't need a garage. You just need a passion.

If you have a passion, you'll always be better off... and you **might** get lucky, too.

(Also - I'm mostly against gigantic organizations that these morphed in to.)

Never-mind me, I'm just dealing with the ideas in my latest read:

Thanks. Do you consider this a bug or a feature?

You can't be shackled down by every organization, government, law, and norm that you're trying to re-imagine in a new space... mostly because none of them will willingly be replaced.

Stealth and experimentation are ***features*** **for sure**.

Work for yourself, even if it is under another person’s leadership. #career #work #success #PersonalGrowth

We discussed "leading up the chain" at #buidl_bali

I will admit, the concept was foreign to me.

I'm not one to generally work **for** a **boss** per se, but working ***with*** others is a whole other thing. It can be exceedingly rewarding.

Ramble aside: excellent advice!

Teaching a teenage kid to code: cool. Teaching him to code when there's a language barrier: cool, but more difficult.

When he memorizes for loop syntax: cool.

Giving him a list of 32k+ baby names and asking him to print them alphabetically, in caps, one per line: it clicks.

Thank you, @AnaelleLTD

I don't **always** have well-rounded perspectives... I just try to only ever peep (or speak) when I do.

The rest of the time - I'm digesting all of the information. Luckily, *listening* in this online community of ours is a generally pleasurable activity.

I think that, more than your environment, the people you choose to surround yourself with have a massive impact on who you become. Whether it is your words or your worlds, it is important to choose very carefully.

I'd just like to add that this is *always* true. We are always evolving, if we are living thoughtfully, we are always self-overcoming.

Your associates (if you have them) -- but, more broadly -- **how you spend your time** determines who you will become.

You, today, be vigilant.

For sure but as long as they have an easy way to analyze, collect and monetize data the tecno-control is not destroyed. We are both fighting the same war.

Absolutely, not destroyed - but at least they'll have some competition!

Monetization will be harder when the data and tools for analysis are open source, globally accessible, and geared at collaboration.

I agree, we're basically on the same page. ;-)

Yes, I understood and appreciate it but I am interested in systems that protect citizen’s #privacy too. Having both would be amazing.

I'd never have known! Is that your real profile picture? 🤔

I'm all about privacy myself. So are many in the space. Eventually, we will likely have both... (and it will be amazing!)

Until then, dismantling data monopolies is probably more important for the state of the world.

Not my best peep. There are many things different to me and the shooter. I should have said something like "The shooter has really shown me how important our environment is in shaping our beliefs. I'm going to turn this into a positive thing by making sure I question myself more"

Doing on-chain analysis of yourself is **brave**, especially since you understand the tech well enough to know what you're doing/committing to.

Wording is important and taking things out of context can always spin intentions, but, in context, your introspection was quite clear.

True! But *you* can too, without having to ask anyone anything!

The goal here (posting everything to a public blockchain) isn't to (necessarily) gain more privacy (you can be anon)... it's to democratize data and network effects that are currently being used to distort reality.

How can #Peepeth avoid 3rd parties to study (and sell) usage of the network? Public data on #blockchain are subject to this kind of things unfortunately.

They won't be able to sell the data, it's free! There is no data monopoly.

They could sell their analysis of the data, but only the data you knew would be public. They haven't infringed on your privacy. Not to mention you never have to link your identity to your off-chain self.

There's probably never been a better time to be alive (depending on how you like to spend your free time and how much you value owning your time), but there have been plenty of times being "white" was probably more empowering.

Thanks for responding! Unintended consequences are incredibly important, I agree. That's the difficulty with software, isn't it? It can often scale faster than the implications can be understood.

Which is why we need more transparency, imo. Opening things up lets more of the world have intelligent debates about how software works in the world... and how it ought to work...

We won't ~~always~~ usually agree... but such discussions need to be global and well-informed.

If we were trying to be pragmatic, then I think we'd need to ask people what is good *for them* case-by-case.

Freedoms are good...

This is a very thorough analysis of the web. Great inputs from Mr B-Lee, though I wonder about the practical implications of the following: “Governments must translate laws and regulations for the digital age. They must ensure markets remain competitive, innovative and open."

Thus far they have failed. Proof is that a handful of tech giants grew to be global "utilities" while abusing data and holding it hostage.

We may finally be getting some tools that will allow governments to be less swayed by special interests (radical transparency is a start).

Lots of talk about tech on here, which is fun. But how do we know if the tech we create is good for us? What moral compass do you use when developing or consuming tech?

What's good for "us" may not be good for everyone. The developed world stands to lose quite a bit of pull if they decentralize the gatekeeping of the world.

Aside from that... my rule of thumb... what's good for humanity probably gives us all equal opportunities and freedoms.

I think it's a decent proposal, but I also think it sort of misses the mark with regard to the spirit of the GPDR law. Not to say that it shouldn't be implemented, just that you're not going to have the "right to be forgotten" in the same sense.

If digital civics was a mandatory part of public education (as it should be) then we could find ourselves in a world where people *do* care about data location and structure.

Having data be public means I am more aware of the implications than I might with a centralised platform. I don't post photos of my family or generally my house. Not that I do that with Twitter, but with a permissioned platform such as Facebook I might.

And when the permissioned platform is hacked (as they tend to be because they have all of this private data) your "secrets" spill out into public view anyway... (by that time your data had been sold several times anyway).

Self censor and use encryption for secrets, ftw.
