Yes, you can post to the blockchain directly. It's not documented, but you can see the format of objects by looking at the IPFS contents of any peep.

Check out https://thenounproject.com/ and see if any of the icons would suite your site. Making a fileicon.ico and putting it also somewhere in the header will add it to your links, instead of the broken image placeholder. @Bevan, perhaps Peepeth shouldn't force image previews :)
