It's been fun, folks, but until the platform gets more active moderation and development, I'm gonna step out. I love the idea of Peepeth and I really hope it takes off. (inb4 it's not an airport, you don't have to announce your departure) Much luck to you all. @bevan

Not pulling rank or anything of the sort. There is a tremendous amount of peer-reviewed literature on this topic (which is, unfortunately, mostly behind journal paywalls, which is another topic altogether). I don't know Kulldorff or their work. Just saying...
pre-prints and blog posts that fit your preferred narrative do not a scientific consensus make.

So again, you just want to pull rank on my personally. Do you not respect Prof. Kulldorff to do his due diligence? There hasn't been time for proper research, is the point. It is all pre-print. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. So let me have my cake (natural immunity).

Another study from the US showing similar results: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.06.01.21258176v3 And here is a Harvard prof being censored for pointing these things out: https://brownstone.org/articles/linkedin-censors-harvard-epidemiologist-martin-kulldorff/

So do you have a problem with the stats from Oxford, or the results of this paper? or just want to pull credentials? I'd like to have a real discussion, but if we're just measuring #@$% I'll hop off here...
I have a problem with cherry picking. The inherent issues with peer reviewed literature are well documented but essentially come out in the wash when taken as a whole. I'm not refuting the Oxford numbers; I'm concerned about what they're being used to justify.

I've taken classes on statistical math, and I'm very familiar with the way it can be misused. Have you seen papers like this one? "Why Most Published Research Findings Are False" This same NIH that won't let people question? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1182327/
I mean, I teach statistics at the college level, so, yeah. π And I'm not sure we're thinking of the same NIH, as they don't make public policy decisions. (And they're clearly hosting the link you're sharing. I'm not sure what your point is.)

I want to apologize for calling your opinion nasty. That was not helpful. I do not feel that this information is dangerous, however. I don't believe any math and science are dangerous. It is just a statistic. Science is about skepticism and continuously running the numbers.

Non-existent. I tried it just to see and it was like $45. I'm perfectly happy keeping it on xDai. But yeah, it's very, very cool. Great community and really nice organizers.

It's a good idea, though it does bring with it potential criticism if their beliefs consistently get labeled as #misinfo. Maybe just a general #indebate tag would work better? Would also work to capture longer multi-peep discussions peeps may not want to see
I've been thinking that same thing with the #politics tag: don't like something? Just reply with it and it's hidden from the timeline, as most folks will just scroll right past, I imagine.

why not teach students how to get an ENS name (the original NFT) where they can store all their crypto addresses, an avatar and other good stuff. then anyone can send crypto to their name. mine for example is nhirsch.eth can send BTC or any erc20 ETH or ADA or ... etc.
I'm really more interested in exploring what we can do that doesn't necessarily involve money, but that's a great idea!

Just used University of Oxford #COVID risk calculator. My risk of COVID associated hospitalization: 0.0214% My risk of COVID associated death: 0.0007% This is what we're losing our #Freedom for? https://qcovid.org/Calculation
I'm not sure I'd include mask wearing and proof of vaccination as losing freedom. At any rate, even for low-risk folks like us, it's not about us; it's for those that are high risk, so we don't get them sick. This prolly needs a #politics tag, too. π

"Portable" in this sense means they're not tied to a service (like a standard badge platform). Say I have a student working in my lab. They get an NFT badge for their time/work there and they can put that on LinkedIn or willow or resume or whatever.
I actually just ran across POAP and I think I'm going to implement that this year for on-campus and virtual events. Looks pretty neat. https://poap.xyz/faqs
Replying to @isysd (0xcab5bbdb90f57853b59aba182c4501b483dab8ed)
Another option would depend on what you mean by "portable." With lazy issuance, you could issue the NFTs for free on a centralized platform like OpenSea, and they wouldn't have an actual transaction until they are transferred/sold.

Absolutely free is not possible ATM, I think... There is at least one blockchain with free transactions, but there are none that support NFTs and are free. That said, this is a promising project that will get costs way way down: https://www.immutable.com/
Hmm, definitely promise there, yeah. I guess when I say "100% free," I'm presuming any costs are being funded by an NSF grant or something and eventually donations that keep the service going without cost to users. Purely for schools, non-profits, NGOs, etc. π€
I know I just whined about not talking about crypto all the time but π Trying to find a way to provide my students with NFT badges that are 100% portable 100% free for me to produce and distribute. No luck. :/ Even the discount at nft.kred is still $4/mo.

Question for everyone: what do you think is the best explainer of just what the blockchain is for someone with absolutely zero knowledge of it? For example, when someone asks what it solves in a daily, practical sense, where do you point them?

This is a lot of nice stuff, except that the implied goal is equal outcomes. I think this is an inherently authoritarian goal. Applied CRT is an excuse for systemic racism against successful cultural groups, i.e. racial quotas in schools and jobs. That's not healthy diversity.
I'll just leave this here. This is why CRT exists: to appreciate how history impacts our current reality.
The amount of flies in Tucson post-monsoon is insane this year. Ugh.
