Ah yep, I see that my structure of the question didn't make complete sense. I meant to structure it so question 1 & 2 were for group A, and question 3 was for group B. Would you say that you can learn to be a software engineer without studying?
I'd say yes, but can't really speak from experience. Here's a great post from the "other" (non-academic) route.

Are there any (a) software engineers on Peepeth/my Twitter? Or (b) entreprenuers who have studied softeng? I’d like to ask: * (a) did you study softeng? * (a) if so, what are the pros/cons of studying&working softeng? * (b) does softeng significantly help you as an entrepreneur?
a) Yep, very recent graduate.
b/c) *Really* depends on the course you take/where you take it. Certain degrees and schools provide little value you couldn't find teaching yourself online. Others cater for specific types of career or acadamia. No one can "teach" entrepreneurship.

already messing around with it :D
Found a bug with Peepeth on Status, but Peepeth works perfectly well everywhere else so... the bug report is awarded to status.

Wait, I am getting some 'resolve' failures, basically a 404 for IPFS. So this site does reflect the same problems I've encountered. It seems if you want your IPFS site to be up 24/7, you need to keep your own node running, and if that's the case, why not just run your own Apache.
because other people can pin your ipfs data for you?
Marshmallows and sausages. I've eaten quite a few ashy sausages that my friends have dropped into the fire. Am I going to die now?

Are there other dapp's where you've developed an identity or reputation around an Eth account?
swarm.city lets you accumulate non-transferable reputation tokens as you complete deals, as another example of what you're asking about, maybe.

great picture! where was this taken?
Aberystwyth, Wales. A small university/tourist town that I'm leaving very soon :)
A few hours free this weekend? an amazing read from "@duckevenfree1" on Twitter, aka "Zero HP Lovecraft" (name very related to content of the text):

Ah, it doesn't look like they support US customers? I'll keep an eye on them. As soon as I find a crypto debit card that works for me (especially if it has a stablecoin), you can bet I'll use it.
I have the good fortune of being EU based
😅

Do either of them have any plans to integrate a stablecoin like Dai? If so, I'd start using them immediately for almost all transactions.
I think the PlutusDEX will have DAI support eventually, don't hold me to that though.
TenX and TokenCard, other projects (not live atm, but TenX was briefly before some card issuer drama), have also stated support for Dai in particular.

I don't know either of these projects. Got a quick description?
Both provide crypto-fiat debit cards. Wirex also does a custodial wallet for Bitcoin and Litecoin, and Plutus is building a DEX (here in etherland).
Wirex and Plutus are both quietly live, which means I can probably close my bank account now (and still always have a backup)
Done with my technical work, finishing my report, I have two (tonight, tomorrow, the morning day after) days left and then I've more-or-less finished this chapter of my life story.
What to do then?
Why it might not be a good idea/at all useful to let people "unpeep" uncommitted peeps: shares, replies, ensos, and tips.
Even if the peep is left uncommitted, if something is still pointing at it, and *that* gets committed, it'd be just as permanent (assuming crawlers pin)
Was waiting for you to do this when I saw all the Swarm City people were joining Peepeth :D

We don't exactly have any precedent to go off of, do we? 😅 Explicit costs are good. (done) Having an open backend is good. (done) User-controlled moderation? (hard? @tay's superpeep talked about this?) it's either monolithic (and gameable) or cliquey (which is okay maybe?)
I'd argue one possible solution is (in the eventual future), for users to be able to subscribe to user-defined feeds (userfeeds.io?) which will all have different sorting/filters.
The point: can't game a system if there are too many systems to game.

Good points, thinking about this. Any ideas for keeping it cool?

If you aren't playing the game, you're losing it.
If the game is poorly designed, nobody wins :)
The earliest days of a social network are always cool: Cohesive community, shared interests, or at least early-adopter mindset.
Then come bots, manipulation, and balkanization.
Any monolithic system, no matter how complex or simple, can be gamed and manipulated.

So the metamask functionality is overkill IMO. All you need is some form of key management. Doesn't need to be blockchain related at all.
Overkill but already standard.
It'd be overkill to stick decentralized apps on Bitcoin or Ethereum unless you want interoperability with the rest of its ecosystem ie, Peepeth tips, which are verifiable, shared on the blockchain, and something you might need metamask for.
Replying to @udiWertheimer (0xa1c25a98427c88806f76317a731c0a621390e744)
The main reason I can see to use ETH here, is that Metamask already exists and is easy to use. Otherwise using something like BTC (and definitely smaller alts like LTC/BCH/DOGE) might actually end up being cheaper
Well.. isn't this a very good reason? Afaik, there's no standard protocol between browser-based bitcoin (or bitcoin based coin) clients for creating rich transactions. Ethereum was intended to create apps, so there is.
Will concede that it likely will eventually exist.

Also, since "peeps" aren't stored on-chain (another great design choice) but only committed to with a hash, it seems like they only provide a proof-of-publication (see https://petertodd.org/2014/setting-the-record-proof-of-publication).
Multi-chain peeping anyone?
🤔

You mean like cryptokitties? I'm still not sure myself why cryptokitties need a "distributed web" :/
But to answer your question: you don't own assets in games/digital economies. That's one of the reasons why people don't tie their games to real-world money (because they couldn't "take away" assets in good conscience if they legally belonged to a player). Different with NFTs.

I'm not working on an Ethereum based project. (I'm building something with Beaker Browser and Dat).
You're clearly the target audience for my talk haha :), it was titled "Distributed state machines, why do we need them?"

What are your thoughts on why they're not interested? What do you think would they should be, and/or change their minds over time?
A guess: My university has some degree of academic focus on Robotics, Bioinformatics, and Computer Vision. My talk was very focused on "Theory" as Distributed Tech tends to. If I had gone up with a game or something immediately "useful", I likely would have seen more interest.

Gave a slightly awkward talk at uni this Friday about my current project; Good: I've been getting less awkward over time (I'm not going to link it (cringe), but second video on Ethereum YouTube channel for a sense of *how* awkward). Bad: Nobody* cares about Distributed Web lol.
*Obviously, you peeps do, and a few of my IRL friends are very receptive, but I'd say out of a lecture hall of ~100, 3 people engaged with what I shared.
Presentation problems, perhaps.
Great way to gauge how early we still are, especially since everyone there was technical.

The first 20% of the project takes the first 80% of the effort, the last 20% of the project takes the last 80% of effort.
if 40% of the project took 160% of the expected effort, that's probably a problem with poor scoping. :D

@jamtech how many jams do you think there are in the crypto community?
All of my bugs and refactors have been based on interactions with a specific library I'm using.
Getting seriously tired of dealing with these issues, so I'm going to reimplement the things I need from it, and make something that hopefully actually works in my use-case.
Thanks for the togs @austingriffith!
but also, uhhh... #bug?

Not sure. Will be interesting to explore more. Assuming tip transactions are also cached until "Save to blockchain" happens, though?
the actual tip is sent immediately and can't be cached, it seems. There'd have to be some kind of off-chain payment channel to cache payments.

I have to admit. No 'LIKE' button is the main difference I feel when using Peepeth compared to Twitter.
isn't the tip button supposed to serve that purpose? put your money where your mouth is and all that :)
Twitter and Facebook's like buttons are virtually just retweet buttons nowadays anyway.
Most Ethereum-based games aren't very "good" yet (relatively speaking), virtually just time-and-money sinks. But for some reason, I'm an active player of three at this stage: cryptokitties, cryptofighters, and hyperdragons; they aren't even the more engaging games in the space!
Crossposting from Peepeth to Twitter. Yes.
There's probably no other place in the world where I am early enough to grab a decent 3 character handle :)
