If anyone hasn't played Ethergoo (idle game on ethereum), check it out (with my referral link, if you don't mind)! https://ethergoo.io/freekitty/0xec3281124d4c2fca8a88e3076c1e7749cfecb7f2

With your whole privacy. This is expensive right?

You also pay on most social media sites by spending anywhere from 10-30% of your time looking at paid advertising that you don't care to see.

dude i love idle games and now i can do it on the ethereum blockchain small problem, the only problem gAS SO EXPENSIVE TO BUY STUFF OMG .30 USD ReALLY?

haha, i know right?? there are definitely a lot of optimizations they could've done in the code to lower gas use. luckily even if you just do the free (e.g. only tx fees) stuff, you can earn back at least some of the tx fees

it only costs your identity

to be fair, i'm giving away as much of my identity by peeping than if i were tweeting. I was referring to the fact that half the content on twitter is paid advertising, so if you're on twitter 2 hours a day, an hour of that is ads. that's worth more than all my peepeth tx fees

I completly agree. On another note, how much have you been using ethergoo. Your etherscan looks like you've been doing alot. Should I be worried about my own sanity?

yeah, you should be extremely worried about your sanity. combines 2 of my favorite things: blockchain and idle games. my productivity is way down the last few days...

i wonder if it can pay gas please tell me it can pay gas also gastoken's pretty cool point is gas is annoying and i wish for it to stop

Gas is a necessary evil. Hopefully in the future it can be abstracted away from the user via automated DEX conversion of tokens like BAT to WETH and account abstraction.

That’s a separate platform though right? What I’m thinking about is whether there’s a way for a Peepeth user to feel like the platform is free so that the gas payment occurs in the background and is netted by some revenue going in.

No, same platform. Brave is a browser. It would just inject ads into the websites you're own and you would earn BAT, which is an ERC20 so you can use your same Ethereum address. No changes to Peepeth would be needed.

Replying to @mitchell (0x5f9e3c22ba69211d0bf848fbb965db6ee3f89608)

I wonder if there’s a way to net the cost on the platform so that it appears free e.g. allow advertisers to pay us for ads/surveys.

Eventually you should be able to do this just by earning Basic Attention Token from viewing ads on Brave.

Is there anything that would keep Peepeth from selling the data? I am unfamiliar with the governance policy.

Who would buy it?? All the data is freely available on the blockchain. Peepeth has no data that anyone can't freely access.

Why does there revenue model affect which database they use? I believe that Peepeth currently controls the proprietary front of this app and its "platform" expect it uses an an immutable distributed database

If twitter used an immutable public blockchain, then how would they inject advertising (their revenue stream)? You can just use the version of twitter the other guy made that just goes right to the blockchain, no ads needed.

I'm surprised there isn't thousands of Twitter users trying this new service. Do they know abt? Is avoiding Twitter censorship not a need? chicken/egg issue because network is so small?

Most people on Peepeth were already using dapp social networks (leeroy, steemit, etc.) and general ethereum devs/users. And who knows, maybe it'll stay that way. Social networks are hard to bootstrap since many people don't wanna use them unless their friends already use them.

If Peepeth was able to build this blockchain in, say 1 year, why couldn't Twitter add blockchain to its service in the next year?

Peepeth didn't build a blockchain, they built this on the Ethereum blockchain. If twitter wants to integrate their platform with Ethereum, I'd be happy to use that. But they wont, because that would mean losing profits.

Peepethsphere, @flex has an SLA 3D printer (Formlabs Form 1+) that I picked up for a steal on impulse at a police auction. Might use it for a crypto project where we allow people to pay for prints in ETH, but for now we're taking suggestions on what to print, give us some inspo.

i'm more intrested in what the people were 3d printing that caused seizure by the police

It would be a game of cat and mouse at that point for the censor and the UI creators. The peeps will always exist on the blockchain as the datastore.

Until the Peepeth frontend is just hosted on IPFS, then there's no cat and mouse. It's a cat chasing its own tail while the mouse has as much cheese as it wants.

This is a good question. Why couldn't a government (e.g. China) force or block the front end of Peepeth?..Paul

See the other messages on the thread. Basically the Peepeth frontend could just be hosted on IPFS and access IPFS/Ethereum directly. It would operate a little slower and would lose the useful feature of action bundling, but it would still work fine.

Replying to @mitchell (0x5f9e3c22ba69211d0bf848fbb965db6ee3f89608)

So if that is the case, what’s the point of the website? UX friendliness? By the way, appreciate the responses to a non-technical noob.

The main reason is the bundling of actions wouldn't really work without the site (you could bundle them, but no one would see them until you commit them all to the chain). Also IPFS can be slow so it helps a lot to have dedicated machines caching the relevant files.

That's exactly how Peepeth Reader works today. :) Another #ethereum-related dapp I've seen taking this approach was a #melon.fund alpha/competition (although they provided their own on-page wallet instead of using MetaMask).

Hadn't heard of that till now, awesome! Still needs functionality to make posts, follow, etc., but it's a functioning, uncensorable feed of posts, which is a great start!

Replying to @mitchell (0x5f9e3c22ba69211d0bf848fbb965db6ee3f89608)

So new websites could continuously emerge creating a cat and mouse dynamic. This would help make peeps available to users, but would creating new peeps become logistically difficult? I suppose you could then peep on any of the new front end sites that were working at the time?

New websites wouldn't even be necessary. Users can just have some local html/javascript/css files that fetch data from IPFS and Ethereum directly. Censorship would basically be impossible unless you block files on IPFS (not an easy thing) or cut-off connection to Ethereum.

Replying to @mitchell (0x5f9e3c22ba69211d0bf848fbb965db6ee3f89608)

Anyone have thoughts on this? Trying to get a sense of how censorship resistant Peepeth is. If a government “blocked” Peepeth, how easy/difficult would that be?

Peepeth as a site is fairly censorable since it is just a website, but another frontend could fairly easily be developed that connected directly to IPFS and the Ethereum blockchain which would be much harder to censor without censoring either of those decentralized systems.

Both end up with about the same risk, right? I have to trust their contract to be unexploitable. It shouldn't matter if I deposited my tokens 'into the contract' or gave their contract permission to access them from my wallet directly. Correct? Ty @ayunknown

Deposit is a little more risky because if the contract is destroyed or becomes locked in any way, then your funds are lost. If it's approval based then you're pretty unaffected. Approval is also cheaper because you don't have to deposit/withdraw to trade, you just have to approve

Well to be fair I trade mostly CFDs, but for my just Crypto trading I have used Binance, and Bittrex but now I mostly use IDEX. Well I dont know about RadarRelay but on IDEX you still have to deposit the tokens to actually trade them.

RadarRelay just requires approval of the contract to move your ERC20s, no deposit required (although you do need to wrap your Eth into Weth)

why? just do it every 5-10 peeps with 2 gwei, usually confirmed in a few minutes

Network seems to be hot this morning! Just went to save my actions and the default gwei was set to 2 (usually about .5), then it took over 15 minutes to save my actions! You think it's peepeth or ethereum network?

That's an Ethereum thing. There's a new game called Ethergoo that's gotten a good amount of attention the past few days so gas price is up a little.

No, the only stuff stored on-chain is ipfs hashes of all the post data. None of the images or even post texts are directly onchain.

ends up being ~1 cent every 15 "actions", so it's pretty cheap
