I've been away from #Peepeth long enough to have a baby (I didn't). What's new?
If you're still confused about Gas in the #Ethereum ecosystem this is a great article from #ConsenSysAcademy.

If you're a developer, it even contains a spreadsheet breaking down the cost of specific operations.
When discussing #Blockchain you hear a lot about hard forks vs soft forks, but did you know there are also two types of hard fork?
- Strictly Expanding Hard Fork
- Bilateral Hard Fork

Thanks once again to the organisers of The Great Southern Unconference @gsucnz, to @InternetNZ for the invite, and to everyone that took part.
I’ve published a writeup on my blog:

The adventure doesn't have to stop just because a season is ending. Some great viral marketing and an impressive video that leaves you wondering where the line of reality is...

The #Peepeth front end is centralised. Content signed for later batch processing seems to be somewhat centralised until it is committed to the chain. You can avoid the intermediate step though. https://peepeth.com/danielmcclure/peeps/QmZ22KJXeqEN98upBu4hWEMFf6eT2QkjiH6N7RU4D4wj
Sorry, the link was trimmed even though it appeared to be within character range:

@Bevan: A warning and disallowing post action is probably better than auto-deleting characters in editor.

Does anyone knows anything about @peepeth architecture? especially about the centralized components?

The truth is you don’t own your #identity. It’s no longer a question of whether a company acts correctly with information, even when operating with the best intentions in mind, they are by their very nature vulnerable and therefore the data they protect are vulnerable. #security
Are we talking about #identity as in a credential used to access a service or identity as in who you are? Although both are potentially vulnerable.
#Twilio plans to acquire #SendGrid. They will be the centralised rails behind the communications of many businesses around the world.
https://www.twilio.com/blog/twilio-to-acquire-sendgrid
Is there a risk in having the comms of so many companies running under one roof?
Fun fact of the day; #NewZealand has the most breweries per capita in the world.
Finally @Namecheap are giving up the ghost on their proprietary #2FA system and joining the #U2F and #TOTP party. Good stuff!
#OpenSource security standards FTW.

I’m back! I got locked out of my @ricmac account back in April, but decided to give Peepeth another go.
Welcome back! @ric is a premium handle surely. What’s new?

I always wanted to travel outside the US to go to Glastonbury festival. I usually do electric forest and bonnaroo here.
I’ve tried to get tickets multiple times for Glastonbury but never got through. There are tons of other great music festivals in the UK though. You could probably go to one every week through summer!

Currently you would lose your peepeth identity. Though you could use your community reputation to transition to a new identity. I assume that @bevan will create a way to recover a username.
Better keep those keys secure then!

Funny #experiment go to https://peepeth.com/peepers, search your own name, and follow button is available.
I now follow myself.

Wondering what happens on #Peepeth if a private key is compromised?
Is there any way to migrate an ID to a new address?
#ENS IDs can be transferred & I believe #uPort allows you to allocate different addresses controlled by a smart contract. Could that be an answer?
cc @bevan
Linking to external content on a #Blockchain based social network like #Peepeth seems fragile somehow.
I'm left wondering what will disappear first; #IPFS mirrors or the linked content?
If it's the latter, it's probably best to add context but direct copying risks infringement.
And then this happened...

Happy International Coffee Day peeps...#internationalcoffeeday
Did you know that #CoffeeDay is actually celebrated on different days around the world?
For example New Zealand's is 29th Sept:

Entire websites hosted on-chain is an interesting development, but I wonder if content updates require another full instance of the site?
Fixing a typo or updating facts could get expensive pretty quickly; in Fees & Blockchain size. Though it's likely more permanent than #IPFS..
Did you know there is currently no common way to prevent motion & light tracking in mobile browsers?
Advertisers & third parties collect data from thousands of websites to track users, detect bots, and various other functionality.

Will physical #cash survive the digital transformation?
Companies like #OpenDime already offer a physical Bitcoin token and others may follow with different assets.
Some suggest smart banknotes with realtime updates could be a viable solution...

A day later, are the things clearer a bit? :)
Based on my understanding #Peepeth infrastructure is:
- Peepeth Servers
→ Web UX & Scripts
→ User Content Cache
- IPFS
→ User Profile Data
→ User Content
- Ethereum Blockchain
→ IPFS Content Hashes
→ Verification Links
@bevan probably knows best 😉

Choosing an #iOS dApp browser for using Peepeth was an excerise in examining motives.
#Toshi, now known as #CoinbaseWallet, is owned by @Coinbase, who also bought #Cipher.
#Trust is great, but now owned by @Binance.
So I Peep with Status.im aiming for decentralisation.
An author argues that #Privacy is the best #Apple product:
https://www.fastcompany.com/90236195/
This seems in line with a trend I’ve noticed where privacy in general seems to be a premium product. Likely as the main profit alternative is ad revenue.
Marketers love data...
Thanks for the warm welcome; @scaur, @voyager & @pluma! Still trying to work out where the Peepeth servers hand over to IPFS and where the Ethereum blockchain begins... In other news, today I learnt what Ensō means...
Publishing content on a blockchain based social media platform, like Peepeth, feels like the modern equivalent of carving into stone. Sure it could be destroyed, but it’ll probably end up being buried in a cave somewhere and dug up eventually.
