We don’t have 100,000 active users yet.

I bet there are more than 100,000 people on twitter talking about cryptocurrency. Someone convince them to get more people over here?

think twice, peep once! haha

I think it's faster to think once, peep twice. Sure, the gas cost is a little extra but I think it's fine to have typos.

How is #peepeth doing compared to other decentralized social networks? What are it's growth plans?

That moment when you make a grammatical error and then it exists forever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In that case, I'd go for some minimum viable asteroid mining operation. Something that demonstrates a potentially profitable pathway for private enterprise to follow. I think this would do more good than e.g. a crewed mission to Mars.

I've heard people arguing strongly on both sides about whether asteroid mining could be economical. Could you tell me why this might work or point me to a post that makes a compelling argument?

Oh, man... that's a hard question. There are a lot of projects that are more practical, but if the premise is that I convince all the countries to cooperate, then I'd go for a space elevator. Once you get the cost of bringing mass to orbit that low, economics will bring the rest.

Hmm, perhaps I should add: could be done in 10 years with no more than 2x current budgets. I'm under the impression that a space elevator is technologically unfeasible in the near term

Humanity divided against itself cannot stand.

Oct 16, 2018 18:45

@altairspace if you could convince all the countries in the world to cooperate on one space project, what would it be?

Once for a simple trade
Twice for freely given aid
Thrice for any insult made

I wanted to make sure to commit this here, so that future generations will know we didn't make all our mistakes blindly. ;)

A reminder that if you want to view your peep file on IPFS, use:

Thanks, this is great!

Also, now you're spelling mistakes are immutable! Oh, and s/you're/your lol

As long as you can extract them from the blockchain, they're immutable, aren't they? :)

Yes, but ease of extraction matters. I can carve something into a titanium plate and launch it into orbit, but that's a very different kind of immutability than putting something on the Ethereum blockchain.

I looked for a github repo to see if I could learn more about this, but there isn't one. I found in the FAQ that the front end isn't currently open source. That's fine... but without source code or documentation, I'm a little worried about the "immutability" of my peeps.

Not all immutability is created equal. Different ways of indexing data make for very different levels of accessibility. I want to know not just that my Peeps are immortal, but how easily discoverable they will be in the future.

I'd also be interested to learn more about how Peepeth uses IPFS. Is the plan to rely on the good will of people running IPFS nodes? The lack of incentives to host IPFS nodes seems like a problem in the medium-long term.

Thanks, this was exactly what I was looking for! It would be cool if this was prominently posted somewhere, maybe linked from the front page. I see there is a link to it at the bottom of the "about" page, but this took some digging to find.

People have been asking me questions about how Peepeth works, and I've realized I mostly don't know. Is there a white paper or explainer that details how Peepeth interacts with Ethereum & IPFS? I'd like to learn more. @bevan @vbuterin (you got me into this :P )

I'm excited to see how Peepeth liberates social media discussion from the tyranny of platform lock in. The ability to control our own data and take it to any platform... it's hard to overstate how important that is!

Welcome to Peepeth, landfish! 🐧Insightful first post! I agree especially when peeps can’t be deleted, but hopefully it also encourages peeple to strive for a higher standard of conduct for themselves.

Incentivizing higher standards of conduct seem good but tricky to get right. One person's standard is another's dog whistle. This problem seems somewhat fundamental, but has been solved in good communities before. I'm cautiously optimistic about the culture here on Peepeth!

Hello world! Some part of me feels uncomfortable knowing these "peeps" may exist for a long time, but then again this is likely true for Twitter as well. I hope our social norms improve such that we will judge people for who they are today, and forgive what should be forgiven.
