I'm announcing a new project! What if the International Space Station was a museum? Follow along to see how far I get. https://altairspace.com/2019/10/25/the-international-space-station-and-an-attempt-at-agile-museum-development/

In a bizarre juxtaposition, prominent asteroid mining company Planetary Resources is acquired by prominent blockchain company ConsenSys. Both companies are lead by experts who have made innovative progress in their fields. https://bit.ly/2SAQYdm

Hmm, perhaps I should add: could be done in 10 years with no more than 2x current budgets. I'm under the impression that a space elevator is technologically unfeasible in the near term

In that case, I'd go for some minimum viable asteroid mining operation. Something that demonstrates a potentially profitable pathway for private enterprise to follow. I think this would do more good than e.g. a crewed mission to Mars.

Today, in a joint mission between the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the European Space Agency, the science probe named BepiColombo will launch toward the planet Mercury. Once in orbit, it will study Mercury's magnetic field, composition, geology and much more.

On this day, 119 years ago, a 17 year old boy named Robert Goddard climbed a cherry tree to prune some branches. He was a dreamer, and when he looked into the sky that day, his mind formulated a goal; he would build a machine that could get us to Mars.

He considered this day a personal holiday, and would later write, "I was a different boy when I descended the tree from when I ascended, for existence at last seemed very purposive."
Happy Goddard Day.

Goddard would go on become the father of modern rocketry, inventing, building and flying the first liquid-fueled rocket engines, filing patents for multi-stage rockets, control mechanisms, et cetera.

@altairspace if you could convince all the countries in the world to cooperate on one space project, what would it be?

Oh, man... that's a hard question. There are a lot of projects that are more practical, but if the premise is that I convince all the countries to cooperate, then I'd go for a space elevator. Once you get the cost of bringing mass to orbit that low, economics will bring the rest.

Copenhagen Suborbitals, an amateur team of engineers whose mission is to send a human into space, has successfully launched their final prototype, Nexø II, and has now begun designing the engine for their final, crewed rocket, Spica. Read their blog post; https://bit.ly/2PFzFFY

SpaceX announced that entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa will accompany 6-8 artists on a trip around the moon, prompting thousands to ask themselves, "Is what I do art?"

Named the #dearMoon project, Maezawa will be "materially contributing" to the R&D costs of the BFR with his fare.

Tomorrow SpaceX will announce the name of the passenger who has signed up to fly around the moon. Attached to the tweet was this rendering of the BFR with a new look, prompting many to wonder if the announcement will follow with a BFR update.

NASA is moving forward with a mission to test the ability to deflect an asteroid--by directly hitting it with a small satellite. The structure and makeup of asteroids is not well understood, and these determine the efficacy of such a deflection technique. http://dart.jhuapl.edu/

I was hoping for an 23:30 ET launch. Don't know if I can keep my eyes open for much longer.

Looking good still...

Barring bad weather, SpaceX will be launching the Telstar 18 VANTAGE satellite tonight. The booster will land on the droneship in the Atlantic ocean. Landings have now become so routine that calling them routine has become routine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apw3xqwsG1U

Two years ago today the OSIRIS-Rex probe launched from Cape Canaveral toward the asteroid Bennu. It will arrive at Bennu on December 3 of this year. Then it will study the asteroid, take a sample, and return it back to earth in March of 2021. (Image credit https://bit.ly/2QgVDjl)
