I arrived at the very same conclusion quite some time ago... before I was a decade old. Have your read *Illusions*, by Richard Bach? The problem, still, is that theory has no regression stopper. You can still ask, well, where did you come from before here? Why would you care to nudge yourself to investigate the question "why" before you sent yourself into this existence? (Is *this* seriously the best you could do?! [- we all have to ask that.]) The idea still appeals to me, but it certainly leaves plenty of unanswered questions.
I think, the Regression stopper would be memory. If you consider the idea of "past Lives" and those claiming to remember them, then a solid memory answers the question "why did I do this". If you forget, you probably have to restart the "program".
I will read this book.

If we are living in a simulation the question "why was this simulation created?" is a fun one. And what stimuli (papers,humans,..) in this simulation might be inserted to control it.

My best guess is: An advanced civilization's attempt to anticipate the problems they may encounter. If I had infinite compute power, I would spin up a few trillion universes with very slight differences, turn the speed up to 10 and watch how civilizations succeed and fail.
I like this answer. The only civilization capable would have been in Africa, which survived almost 20 Dynasties before a 'DownFall'. in that time, a lot could be learned So, They were probably bored and created a 3 dimensional rendition of their livelihood..
