individuals are too busy to care that their data is being collected and that won't motivate them to switch to a new platform.

a better message is that existing sites are inherently harmful and decentralized versions can provide better service to users

we got a glimpse of the merit of a non-profit social media site when fb, reddit etc were all built with heaps of VC money.

now as these companies roll out their monetization strategies, we suffer. the misaligned incentives on these sites are breaking our brains and dividing us.

i think the crypto community shys away from this messaging because it unveils how the market is fundamentally unable to provide us the social media service we want.

this is ghoulish! these platforms have become critical to our daily lives/interactions but fail to even provide us with their intended service.

it all comes down to the need for retention.

on sites like youtube & fb, the need for retention feeds people radical content (shitty news, alex jones etc). on sites like tinder, the need for retention effectively withholds love from users to keep them on the app.

the fact that companies collect and sell your data, while disturbing, isn't enough to inspire people to seek out a better alternative as the effects aren't explicit. a more compelling argument is the misaligned incentives of centralized, profit driven communication platforms
